film…a nice addition

kickin’ it retro…

This year for Christmas Jeremy bought me a film camera.  He knew I had been longing to go back and play with film for a while now so it was the perfect gift!  The camera itself is almost identical to my Nikon D700.  Jeremy thinks of everything!  He purchased a Nikon F100 so all of my lenses could be used with it.

Wow is all I have to say.  I took Fia out and played around with one roll.  We are so so spoiled by digital.  I had no idea really just how spoiled until I popped that first roll in the camera.  I set up the shot, clicked the shutter and immediately pulled the camera away to check the lcd as I always do with the first shot digitally!  Oops there’s no instant gratification with film…the things that so easily become forgotten after shooting digitally for almost 11 years.  I am sorry film for that brutal betrayal…

I mailed the roll off to Richard Photo Lab in California the next day.  Why there?  Because I know they know what they are doing when it comes to film.  They were at the Mexico workshop Jeremy attended with Jose Villa last year.  Plus I wanted to see how this new camera would be setting wise.  I told them to push the exposure by one stop so I could get an idea.

One other thing I might warn you if you are wanting to play with film…do one roll at a time to get use to the camera.  Film is not cheap!  For 24 exposures to be processed and scanned it was $30.  So that averages out to $1.25 an image without prints.  But it is worth it!  Film offers a lot and there is a distinct look that you just cannot achieve digitally.

I know the big question is…how many images came out from the 24?  I am happy to say 21.  I was really worried since this was the first roll that not very many would come out.  Let’s face it…I have not done this in a long time!

Here are a couple images from that first roll.  I cannot wait to see the progress by the fourth roll!

Family Mini Sessions…Stoney Creek Christmas Tree Farm

a modern twist…

I had such a great time this year photographing some amazing families at our holiday mini sessions!  The backdrop was the beautiful Stony Creek Christmas Tree Farm in Noblesville.  It was gorgeous!  Add in a few decorated trees, a vintage banner and some hot chocolate and you have the perfect setting for a fab holiday photo!  Santa even drives the hayride back to the Christmas trees!  Is this place perfect or what?

I love our clients and it so fun to see them again in front of our lens.  We truly get the best clients and are so grateful to call them friends.  I have picked a few of my favorite images from the day…enjoy!

XOXO,

Vickie

Laura + Matt…Engaged {Indianapolis Wedding Photographer}

the wait…

Laura and Matt’s wedding is a much anticipated event.  This wedding is going to be the biggest celebration their friends and family have ever seen.  Why?  Because they have been in love for 13 years.  Can you say major delayed gratification?  Words cannot even begin to describe how awesome they are!

We photographed their engagement session two weeks ago and had a wonderful time!  These two are fun and they are willing to do anything.  A perfect combination!

We started at Lucas Oil Field and ended at The Circle.  I am posting some of my favorite images below and be sure to check out the video to see more.

Laura and Matt…we cannot wait for your wedding!

XOXO,

Vickie

flashback the first time…{Indianapolis Wedding Photographer}

I was cripled with fear and self doubt…

I believe this is something every wedding photographer can relate to…their first time documenting a wedding.

I recently have had  the pleasure of re-photgraphing our very first bride from years ago and it has opened the flood gates to photographing that first wedding so long ago.  The couple were super sweet and knew they were our first wedding ever.  They trusted us and we were so grateful for the opportunity…one that would lead to documenting countless other weddings…including her little sister’s wedding.  For that kind of blind trust I am forever grateful.

The weeks leading up to the big day we practiced for fear we might forget something.  We studied weddings, we talked and dreamed all things weddings.  The night before we double and triple checked our gear.  I remember we did not get any sleep. I was too nervous and Jeremy was anxious.  I was terrified something would go awry and Jeremy said this is an opportunity.  We can do this.  I need to hear this from him whenever we try something new…it gives me the confidence to tackle new situations.  He is my rock.

We arrived an hour and a half early to scout out the location and discuss different scenarios.  I felt like I would throw up…for a moment I was cripled with self doubt.  I gave myself my famous “fake it until you make it” speech  but my nerves were shattered.  I told myself just go photograph something, anything at this point.  So I walked outside and started photographing detail shots…once I saw the images on the back of the lcd screen on my camera I knew we had this.  The confidence grew and the day with it’s bumps along the way…the cake starting to melt and issues with the license just sort of smoothed itself out.

Jeremy and I learned something very important that day…we are a team.  We had always been one but this was different.  I can’t explain it in words.  It was the start of something amazing for us.

 At every wedding we both have our distinct roles and we play upon each others strengths.  It is what creates our style of images and gives the bride and groom the fabulous end result.  We learned countless lessons that day but this is the most important one…we learned we were in sync.

The wedding lasted 10 hours.  Jeremy and I stayed documenting their day and then some.  I was awe struck by the beauty of it all.  The intensity of love, the electricity of the dance floor, the beauty of the people around us.  Their wedding was perfect.  There was not a wedding out there that could have been planned better.

The wedding was beautiful.  They were beautiful.  We were in love with love and that was the beginning of something oh so fabulous…WE were wedding photographers.

Lucy + TJ…thank you for taking a chance on us!

XOXO,

Vickie
